Soccer Recap: Brunswick Edges Taft, LC takes down KO, and More:

While some teams are still waiting for their season openers, these ones have already started their respective campaigns. While some teams are coming off an impressive 2014 season, many aspire to improve upon their performances from a year ago. Every school will vie to take Berkshire’s title from them, and that quest starts from the first game. Here is your opening weekend’s recap:

Taft 3-4 Brunswick

The Bruins spoiled a Rhino comeback in the final minutes by capitalizing on a penalty kick. Taft mounted a furious comeback in the latter stages of the match with two straight goals from Matteo Mangiardi ’17. Those two goals completed Mangiardi’s the hat trick, but they were not enough to overcome Brunswick.

Mangiardi’s first goal also happened to open the scoring in the contest and gave Taft an early 1-0 lead. Taft’s only lead of the game, however, would not last long as Brunswick quickly answered off a corner kick. Minutes after that they sprung their striker on a breakaway who converted the gift for a 2-1 lead which they took into halftime.

Up next the Bruins look to build off their strong start when they host a strong Loomis squad. Taft, meanwhile, aims to put the loss behind them and rebound against Westminster on Wednesday.

Loomis Chaffee 3-1 Kingswood Oxford

Despite a strong effort by KO, they failed to upset the perennial powerhouse Loomis. The Wyverns had taken a 1-0 lead into halftime, but they were unable to hold onto that slim lead in the second half. The Pelicans came out buzzing in the second half and scored two quick goals in the first ten minutes off the head off Aaron Dang ’17 and the foot of PG Jeremy Conn. LC added an insurance goal just as the match ended.

Loomis, looking to build of their one loss season last year, will travel to Greenwich, CT next to face Brunswick while KO will take on Canterbury.

Hopkins 2-2 Choate

A back and forth contest ended with a draw and a point for each team. The Wild Boars took the lead midway through the first with a score from defensemen Jack Hutchinson ’17, but Hopkins foiled that with an answering tally two minutes later. The two teams traded scores yet again in the second half with Choate cashing in first. Hopkins, however, answered again off a late penalty kick and happily came out with the 2-2 tie.

Coming off a successful season with just five loses, the Wild Board aim to stay undefeated as they face Worcester Academy this Thursday.

Vermont 1-3 Deerfield

Deerfield kicked off their 2014-15 campaign with a solid victory over Vermont
Academy. Deerfield’s goalie Tim Gerber ’17 may have saved the game for them as he Soccer-Photo-3stopped a penalty kick in the 80th minute when
the sco
re was still 2-1. Earlier, despite ceding the first score, Deerfield quickly took the lead with two goals
in less than two minutes, both from Brendan O’Connell ’16. The tallies allowd Deerfield to take a 2-1 lead into halftime. Shortly after Gerber’s save, Deerfield added an insurance tally to secure the win.
